24 Covid-19 patients died in the last 24 hours after a government hospital in Karnataka ran out of medical oxygen.

The incident happened in Chamarajanagar, 175 kilometres from Bengaluru.

The family members of the deceased have staged a protest in front of the hospital demanding action against the officials.

However, officials told reporters , as many as 12 patients died due to lack of oxygen as the hospital ran short of supply of the critical gas, while others died due to various co-morbid conditions.

Families alleged that the authorities were fabricating the number of deaths.

Most of the deceased belonged to the 30-40 age group.

Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa has asked health minister Dr Sudhakar to immediately visit the district and take stock of the situation. The Chief Minister has also summoned an emergency meeting on Tuesday evening in the backdrop of the incident and the severe short supply of oxygen across Karnataka.

“Criminal negligence has led to these 24 deaths in Karnataka. Why do CM BS Yediyurappa and Minister Dr. Sudhakar K keep lying everyday saying there is enough oxygen? Is there no accountability? How many more will be ‘killed’ because the Govt can’t supply Oxygen?,” Karnataka Congress president DK Shivakumar questioned the government in a tweet.
