13 attendees at Amit Shah’s function die of dehydration, heatstroke

At least 13 people died and 50 others were hospitalised after suffering from dehydration and heatstroke while attending a Maharashtra government event held in an open ground at Kharghar in Navi Mumbai Sunday in which Union Home Minister Amit Shah conferred the ‘Maharashtra Bhushan 2022’ award on Appasaheb Dharmadhikari.

Nearly 700 people complained of dehydration, high blood pressure and exhaustion and medical help was provided to them, the government officials said.

At least 50 patients have been admitted to various hospitals in the state.

Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and others visited the MGM Hospital in Navi Mumbai late this evening to enquire about the well-being of the people admitted there.

He announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the kin of the deceased.

Congress chief spokesperson Atul Londhe said that it was a government function and hence the safety of the participants was its duty.

“So many people have lost their lives. The government should be booked for culpable homicide and action should be taken against those responsible,” he said.

In fact, during his speech, Amit Shah saluted the people for sitting patiently in the 42 degrees C temperatures as an example of their dedication.

BJP office-bearers said more than 10 lakh people attended the event.

“India’s Home Minister was the guest of the Maharashtra Bhushan Award ceremony. People were made to sit in the open sun for hours leading to death of 13 people and 700 suffered heat stroke. This is a criminal act and the responsibility should be fixed,” said Congress.
