Anitha’s brother complaints against AIADMK minister over manipulated campaign video featuring her voice

Family members of S Anitha, a medical aspirant from Tamil Nadu who died by suicide in September 2017 after NEET was introduced, filed a police complaint against AIADMK politician and Tamil Language Minister Ma Foi K Pandiarajan after a video of her with dubbed voice over in favour of ruling AIADMK was tweeted from his Twitter handle on Sunday.

In the video, a voice over for Anitha narrates that more than 427 students from poor families have been studying in medical colleges in Tamil Nadu and it was made possible in the Jayalalithaa’s government.

According to The Hindu report, minister claimed that the video uploaded without his knowledge.

The complaint was filed by Anitha’s brother S. Manirathinam.

According to the complainant, the footage and pictures of her late sister had been used in the video without the approval of her family and the voice over was dubbed to cheat the public.

Manirathinam who released a video with the background of her bust, also wrote to the Chief Electoral Officer seeking action against Pandiarajan.

Hours after the video triggered widespread outrage on social media, Pandiarajan subsequently removed the post from his twitter account.

S Anitha was a 17-year-old girl from a Dalit family in the Kuzhumar village in Ariyalur district of Tamil Nadu. She wanted to study medicine and had scored brilliantly in class 12 state board exams. She scored 1176/1200 in the 12th standard exams in the Tamil Nadu State Board. This would have secured her a medical seat, if only the State Board marks had been considered for admission. But she could not clear the 40% cut-off mandated by NEET. She had even gone to the Supreme Court to seek cancellation of NEET on the grounds that it discriminated against rural students, but her plea was rejected. Nine days after the judgment, she died by suicide.

The NEET is a heavy political issue in the Tamil Nadu polls. While DMK has promised to abolish it in the first assembly session if it comes to power, the ruling AIADMK has said in its manifesto that it will establish coaching centres in districts for MBBS aspirants.
