Savarkar portrait inside Karnataka assembly; Congress protests

The Karnataka BJP government’s move to put up Hindutva icon Savarkar’s portrait at the state assembly has triggered protests by the opposition on the opening day of the winter session of the assembly.

Siddaramaiah, Leader of Opposition questioned the need to feature a Hindutva figure inside the Karnataka assembly. The Congress leaders held up pictures of Jawaharlal Nehru during the protest.

“They want us to disrupt the assembly and protest. They know we are going to raise issues of corruption in the session so they are trying to cause trouble by putting up the Savarkar portrait without consulting the opposition,” said Karnataka Congress chief DK Shivakumar.

The portrait of Savarkar was unveiled by Karnataka Assembly Speaker Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri.

Meanwhile, Siddaramaiah also wrote to the Speaker to install portraits of personalities like Valmiki, Basavanna, Kanaka Dasa, BR Ambedkar, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and many others.
