Gauri Day : Commemorating Gauri Lankesh’s Birth Day

Gauri Memorial Trust is planning to commemorate Gauri Lankesh’s birthday on 29th January as ‘GAURI DAY’ with a unique line up of events. It will see the generation next, who Gauri used to call her children, assemble at one place to declare their renewed commitment to uphold secular and equitable democracy as well as remember their fond association with Gauri.

They will be joined by veteran actor, Prakash Rai, Kavitha Lankesh and others. This will be followed by an ensemble of folk, rap and classical musical programme, led by Arathi (Bangalore), Sheetal of Kabir Kala Manch( Pune) and renowned musician T M Krishna (Chennai).

Gauri Lankesh  was an Indian journalist-turned-activist from Bangalore, Karnataka. She worked as an editor in Lankesh Patrike, a Kannada weekly started by her father P. Lankesh, and ran her own weekly called Gauri Lankesh Patrike. She was shot to death by Sangh Parivar assailants outside her home in Rajarajeshwari Nagar on September 5, 2017. At the time of her death, Gauri was known for being a critic of right-wing Hindu extremism. She was honored with Anna Politkovskaya Award for speaking against right-wing Hindu extremism, campaigning for women’s rights and opposing caste based discrimination

Gauri Memorial Trust is an extension of her voice, an attempt not just to carry on her memory, but to uphold values for which Gauri fought and even laid down her life. It is a way of telling the killers/destructive forces that the spirit of Gauri can never be silenced; that it will emerge stronger, with renewed vigour. The Trust, purports to achieve this by continuing and commemorating her contribution to activist journalism.
