Hartal over Kathua rape: Civil society respond to the mass arrest by Kerala police

Public Statement

The Kerala police have arrested more than a thousand people in connection with the harthal seeking Justice for Kathua rape victim. Several youths were held on charges of non-bailable offenses. These youths, both the activists belonging to various organizations as well as individuals, were democratically protesting against the Sangh Parivar forces, whose members were involved in the ghastly rape-murder of the eight-year-old. While it is understood that the law must be upheld during hartals, as it should be on every other day, accusing these protesters of creating communal polarization charging them with non – bailable offenses is discriminatory and unethical.

It is evident that the political parties in Kerala, including the ruling CPI(M), are backing the Sangh Parivar conceit that the protest seeking justice for Asifa was one against the Hindu society. These parties blissfully fell prey to Sangh Parivar’s exaggerated propaganda over violence during the day of harthal. This biased representation of facts has since been nailed by independent media investigations. We realize there is an apparent lack of growth in democratic sensibility to recognize emerging modes of protests and gatherings that are conducted outside the conventional organizational frameworks and are without mainstream political backing.

We the undersigned hereby demand the immediate release of all the accused arrested in Kerala during the last few days. Reducing democratic protests and gatherings to means of advancing ulterior political agendas and thereby demonizing people participated in them is dangerous. We demand the state and law enforcement agencies approach the matter in an unbiased manner and desist from violating citizens rights.
