Perumal Murugan makes International Booker Prize 2023 longlist with ‘Pyre’

Perumal Murugan, a renowned Tamil author, has made it to the longlist of the International Booker Prize 2023 for his book ‘Pyre’. The book, originally written in Tamil, has been translated into English by Aniruddhan Vasudevan. This marks the first time that Tamil has appeared on the prestigious award’s longlist.

The longlist for this year’s International Booker Prize contains 13 books, including works in Bulgarian and Catalan. The award recognizes the best work of fiction translated into English, which has been published in the UK or Ireland in the last year.

Perumal Murugan, who had faced targeted attack from Hindutva groups for his previous books, has created a poignant tale with ‘Pyre’. The novel is set in rural Tamil Nadu of the 1980s and tells the story of young love, which is challenged by social discrimination.

Last year, Indian author Geetanjali Shree made history by becoming the first-ever Indian author to win the International Booker Prize for her novel ‘Tomb of Sand’, translated by Daisy Rockwell.

The shortlist for the International Booker Prize 2023 will be announced on April 21, with the winner being announced on June 1. The prize money of £50,000 will be shared equally between the author and translator of the winning book.
