Kerala: 17-year-old girl found dead in residential madrasa, relatives allege harassment

A 17-year girl, Asmiya, was found dead at a residential Madrasa named Al Aman at Balaramapuram in Thiruvananthapuram on Saturday.

The family members of the girl said they suspect foul play and have filed a complaint with the Balaramapuram police, local media reported.

The body of the girl was found in the bathroom of the institution.

According to Asmiya’s mother who is the complaint, circumstances surrounding the death of the girl are suspicious and that she was subjected to harassment at the Madrasa.

Asmiya called her mother on the phone and asked her to reach the institution immediately on Saturday at around 2pm, the complainant said. Though she reached immediately, the authorities did not allow her to meet Asmiya, the complainant said.

Later, Asmiya’s mother was informed that her daughter was found dead in the bathroom.

“She was locked in a room for hours,” a relative said.

Asmiya, a residential student, had complained about the harassment she faced at the institute.

The Balaramapuram police have registered a case of unnatural death and have begun a probe.

Asmiya’s body was subjected to autopsy at the Medical College Hospital Thiruvananthapuram.
