‘Justice for Rohith Vemula’ March: Kerala Police Case charged against Meena Kandasamy and Other Activists

Activist and writer Meena Kandasamy took to Twitter on Tuesday to register her protest against Kerala police for filing a case against her and others for participating in a protest march, soon after the death of Rohith Vemula. “…What is the CPM position on honouring his memory? Kerala police have filed a case against me and my friends for participating in a protest march, the day after his murder,” she tweeted. “Why his dissent/protest criminalized in a state that is supposedly under a “Communist government”? Why does the Kerala police describe me (a writer) as a leader of a cultural organisation, Porattam, which according to them is a Naxalite front?” she said in another tweet.

The protest was called by Janakeeya Manushyavakasha Prasthanam, Kerala Dalit Maha Sabha and other organizations shortly after the death of Vemula ie second week of January 2016.  Some people have received summons for appearing in the court today. Janakeeya Manushyavakasha Prasthanam state secretary Adv. Thushar Nirmal, and Kerala Dalit Maha Sabha state president C S Murali Shankar are the first and second accused in the case respectively. DSU leader Ami Roop Shyna, human rights activist Suja Bharathy, cultural activist Swapnesh Babu , social activists P Manuelpeejay Joseph, Jenny We See, Jolly Chirayath, Joseph Makkolil, Jaison C Cooper Sushama Thoppil and Asha figure in the case.
