The students’ union of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai on Wednesday called for a strike across all campuses of the institute to protest against the authorities’ decision to charge tuition fee, dining hall and hostel fee from Dalit , Adivasi, OBC and minority students , PTI reported. TISS has campuses in Mumbai, Tuljapur, Hyderabad and Guwahati. TISS Hyderabad, Guwahati and Tuljapur have supported the boycott call and are to present their demands to the respective deputy directors.
“Your move, TISS admin, 24 hours and counting. We want scholarships and financial aid for SC,ST,OBC and minority students. We want more student aid for all students. We won’t tolerate any more fee hikes, drop outs and deferments. We won’t tolerate humiliation and attacks on our dignity and self respect.” TISS Students’ Union President Archana Soreng told in protest. The students’ association has claimed that the institute has withdrawn all forms of financial aid to students. The Centre’s Post Matric Scholarship (GOI-PMS) issue stands unresolved since the institute has notified its withdrawal from all forms of financial aid to students. The students’ association has also demanded a notification from the institute about ways in which financial assistance for the PMS students of the upcoming batch of 2018-2020 will be provided.
“The state and central government which have been constantly reducing fund in higher education also need to be made to hear our noise! Let’s come together and resist this onslaught on social justice and attempt by the Brahminical system to exclude the students from marginalised sections.” Sunny Suman , student of Tiss Tuljapur posted on Facebook. Students said that the institute, without mentioning anything in the prospectus, was now demanding tuition, dining hall (DH) and hostel fee from scholarship students of the 2016-18 batch.
