Kerala Floods: Modi Government’s open refusal to help

Tenaaz Mohazin

The State of Kerala was hit by the worst flood of all times with 1,132mm of rain, highest of records. The monsoon rain took more than 380 lives, thousands of homes and over a million people are in the relief camps. This number can be indisputably put to get a picture of the state’s losses.

However, the center has shown a clear ditch against the condition, irrespective of PM Narendra Modi’s visit to ‘take stock of the unfortunate situation due to flooding’ on Saturday . An immediate financial assistance of Rs 500 crore was sanctioned, where the Kerala CM seeked for an assistance of Rs 2000 crores. But the initial estimates put the loss at RS 20,000 crores.

The denial from the central government doesn’t end here. Kerala is now liable to pay an amount of Rs 233 crores for the provided 89540 metric tons food grain. Which implies , no free food even in the toughest of times. The letter from the Ministry of Food and Public Distribution
also says, if the State fails to meet the payment, the amount will be deducted from other centeral government allowed schemes.

Keeping aside the needed supports and attention from the center’s part, Government has reportedly rejected any UN support for the state. Reports say External Affairs Ministry had informed UN that the Indian government was able to manage the relief activities in the flood-hit state.

Regardless of these, people affected by the flood and those helping the affected are ready to rebuild the state. All the valuable gestures from in and around Kerala are the kind of stimulus which takes the state forward to humanity, like ever before. Kerala is busy pledging together #weshallovercome.
