On the 11th anniversary of the ‘Batla House Encounter’, members and activists of the Ulama Council have left Azamgarh via Kaifiyat Express, to protest outside the house of Delhi’s Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. On 19th September, 2008 in a ‘encounter’ with Delhi police two people Aatif and Sajid, alleged to be involved in serial blasts were killed and one Sarfaraz was arrested. All three belonged to Azamgarh.

Ulama Council has been raising questions on the authenticity of this ‘encounter’. They organize protests every year on 19th September, demanding judicial investigation into this case. Before boarding the train for Delhi, activists of the council said, that if Delhi CM can constitute a SIT into Sikh riots of 1984, why despite making promises, similar gesture has not been repeated in the Batla encounter case. They said, their protests will continue till such a committee is not constituted.

It will be eleven years today since the Special Cell of Delhi Police claimed to have unravelled the conspiracy of the serial blasts that had struck the capital city the previous week, and the ‘encounter’ that resulted in the death of Inspector Sharma, a veteran of dozens of encounters and two young men Atif Ameen and Sajid.

Many civil-rights movements raised many questions about the drama of ‘encounter’ and tried to prove this incident as a ‘fake encounter’ to terrorize and witch-hunt Muslims. PUDR (Peoples’ Union for Democratic Rights), PUCL (Peoples’ Union for Civil Liberties), Jan Hastakshep, APCR (Association for the Protection of Civil Rights), Jamia Teachers Solidarity Association (JTSA) and FDI (Forum for Democratic Initiatives) conducted the fact-finding surveys and documented the reality to expose the police narratives.
