Kerala: Adivasi policeman who was found dead recently, subjected to severe abuse by authorities, alleges family

The death of policeman Kumar of AR camp, Kallekkkad in Palakkad district comes under scrutiny after his family alleged caste discrimination and abuse from police authorities. Kumar’s wife Sajini alleged that her husband was subjected to severe discrimination and harassment in the police force. She said that Kumar had been beaten up, stripped naked and locked in police quarters in the past. Prasad had to endure intense mental torture from his governing officers. Kumar was found dead near Lakkidi railway rack as though fallen from the train three days ago. Shornur police has filed a case on unnatural death and the investigation is carried out right now.

His family has alleged that Kumar was teased and tortured for his Adivasi identity and the authorities alleged Kumar of being dumb and stupid, siting his identity as the reason. The torture went on for months. Two ASIs and an SI took part in the harassment. Kumar was forced to work overtime and sometimes he was stopped from working. Kumar’s wife Sajini said that she will file complaints to the Chief minister and top police officials.

However, police chief of Palakkad has denied any reports of caste discrimination in A R police camp. The police said that Kumar was absent for the past two weeks without permission and he was given a memo on the matter.
