Jamia Millia students issued show-cause notice for protesting against Israeli participation in university


Protest over Israel’s participation in Jamia Millia Islamia last week, invites trouble for students as Proctor sends show-cause notice.

Five students of Jamia Millia Islamia have been issued a show-cause notice for allegedly “disturbing the normal functioning” of the varsity, a week after they demonstrated against an event on campus in which there was a participant from Israel.

The notice said the students had “indulged in acts” that have “tarnished the image of Jamia and disturbed the normal functioning of the university”.

“We were protesting peacefully against the event,” one of the students issued show-cause notices told Maktoob.

“We were physically assaulted by the Jamia administration for participating in the protest demonstration on that day and instead of taking action against the assaulters, we are now being subjected to action, ” he said.

“Two students were slapped by the guards in the ensuing scuffle. The scuffle was initiated by the assistant proctor, it can be confirmed by viewing the recording made by the CCTV inside the compound,” he said.

Back to against Israeli participation in an international conference titled ‘Global Health Zenith Confluence ’19’ organized by the Faculty of Architecture and Ekistics which was held on 5th and 6th October in Jamia Millia Islamia, a joined statement signed by national cultural and intellectual figures expressed discontent over the conduction of the event in this, university which has a strong Muslim heritage and cannot in any way join hands with the state of Israel.
