Stalin, Owaisi and Ramesh Chennithala join Justice For Fathima campaign. Probe moved to Central Crime Branch

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam President MK Stalin, the President of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen Asaduddin Owaisi and Ramesh Chennithala, Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Legislative Assembly demanded a fair and independent probe into the suicide of Fathima Latheef, a first year student of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras.

Stalin, reacting to the incident, said the investigation into the student’s death should be time-bound.

Stalin also advocated avoiding “saffronisation” of education. “Do everything required to treat all as equals like the national flag’s tricolour,” the DMK chief added.

“Fathima’s suicide was a direct result of the discrimination she faced as a Muslim. As the institutional murders of Rohith Vemula and Payal Tadvi have shown, Dalit, Adivasi and Muslim students face immense odds in the education system. Universities have failed in addressing the discrimination and exclusion that young men and women like Fathima had to face,” Asaduddin Owaisi  said.

Ramesh Chennithala- the leader of opposition blamed that the communal and fascist forces killed Fathima Latheef.

Chennai Police have transferred the case to the Central Crime Branch (CCB), after her parents recovered a mobile phone note that named three faculties as the reason for her death. The parents have also claimed that three faculty members had subject their daughter to religious persecution. The police have conducted preliminary interrogations of her friends and some members of the faculty.

Fathima’s family has alleged that the faculties taunted her for belonging to the Muslim community.

” My daughter faced casteist and religious discrimination from her faculties. Earlier she said that her name (Muslim name) itself is a problem there”, Abdul Latheef told media on Tuesday.

Notes in her mobile phone had mentioned some faculty names as the cause of her death. She names three faculties of HSS, IIT Madras for pushing her to take the most extreme decision – Sudarshan Padmanabhan, Milind Brahme and Hemachandran Karah.
