‘Great mental and physical torture in NIA custody,’ Assam activist Akhil Gogoi reveals

Assam peasant leader and Right to Information activist Akhil Gogoi revealed he was subjected to torture in the custody of the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

“I am being tortured. I appeal to the people to not suspend the protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 but continue them,” Akhil Gogoi told journalists while being produced in a court of the NIA in Guwahati on Tuesday.

“Yes, great mental and physical torture. I have been subjected to very inhumane treatment,” Gogoi answered to the Scroll reporter’s question on custodial torture.

A special National Investigation Agency court granted the agency 10 days’ custody of Akhil Gogoi on Tuesday.

His role in the recent protests in Assam against the Citizenship Amendment Act was the immediate cause for his arrest, the police sources said.

According to Indian Express report, Gogoi was charged with sedition, intention to cause riot against national integration, punishment for criminal conspiracy and unlawful association under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).

The FIR also names three associates from the organisation he founded and heads: the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti, scroll reports.

He was aslo accused of instigating violence in the protests in coordination with Maoists.

” It’s totally false. I have never been with Maoists, am not with them and will never be with them in the future,” Gogoi said in the interview with Scroll.
