Jaipur lynching: ‘We will take every Kashmiri out of Jaipur,’ attackers told Kashmiri teenager

Kashmiri teenager named Basit Khan (18), working as a caterer in Jaipur’s Harmada area, died on Thursday, a day after he was severely beaten up by a group of miscreants from Mumbai.

“We will take every Kashmiri out of Jaipur,” Sufyan Rafiq, the only eyewitness to Basit Khan’s beating told The Quint on Friday, a day after Khan succumbed to his injuries in a hospital in Jaipur.

Basit was involved in catering work in the city and was beaten up while he was on his way back home after work, on the midnight of February 5. Basit succumbed to his injuries at 8:30 pm on the night of 6 February.

According to Basit’s friend Saquib, doctors at Jaipur’s SMS Hospital, where Basit was taken, had initially dismissed the injuries and conducted a CT scan only after his friends insisted on it. “He sat down on the road and began crying, saying his head was hurting,” Saquib added.

By the afternoon of Friday, his body was sent via a private ambulance to Kunan-Poshpura in Kashmir’s Kupwara district, where his family lives, a Kashmiri activist who is working in Delhi told Maktoob.

The police has registered an FIR under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code and one person named Aditya (24) has been arrested.

Basit is survived by his mother and four siblings. His father passed away two years ago. He was the oldest in the house, with three younger sisters and a brother.

This is the third incident of violence against Kashmiris reported in Rajasthan in the past few months.
