Live: East Delhi on the edge of anti-Muslim pogrom as Muslim localities targeted

Many anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protesters, their houses and properties were targeted by Delhi policemen and Pro-CAA goons today as police violence broke out across multiple northeast Delhi neighbourhoods for a second time in less than 24 hours.

Updates:

20.20: One more death. Furqan Ansari, 32, has died due to bullet injuries during the violence led by Delhi Police and supporters of CAA against Muslims in North East Delhi on Monday.

19.30: According to Indian Express, a civilian named Mohd Furqan was killed during violence against anti-CAA protesters in northeast Delhi today

18.45: Muslim Houses are still torched near Maujpur Metro station as Delhi police forces fail to take control over the situation. Muslims are evacuated from and pushed back to Jaffrabad Metro station as half a kilometre stretch of road becomes the hotbed of anti-Muslim violence in East Delhi. Media personal are denied to enter the region as tensions rise.

18.35: “Don’t call it a clash, call it an organised attack on Muslims by Hindutva goons with support of Delhi Police,” poet and activist Nabiya Khan said.

18.30: Muslim Students of JNU has called for a gherao of Delhi Police headquarters against police brutality and right wing sponsored violence on peaceful anti-CAA protesters.

Aam Admi Party counselor Muhammed Tahir Hussain’s house has also been attacked by pro-CAA goons.

18.00: Entry & exit gates of Jaffrabad, Maujpur-Babarpur, Gokulpuri, Johri Enclave and Shiv Vihar metro stations are closed, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation said. Trains will terminate at Welcome metro station, it added.

17.45: Thousands of Muslim women of Seelampur-Jaffrabad have gathered under the Jaffrabad Metro station building against police brutally and violence by Hindutva goons.

“The other side of the road is filled with armed mob. Nobody is allowed to take cameras out. Police is standing as mute spectators accepting refreshments from pro-CAA extremists,” Maktoob’s Shaheen Abdulla reports.

17.00: The Congress alleged that the BJP leaders are giving hate speeches in Delhi and the Delhi Police are taking no action due to which there is a complete breakdown of law and order. 

16.00: Section 144 of the CrPC was imposed at ten locations in North-east district of Delhi on Monday after a violence broke out by pro-CAA protesters against Muslims in Maujpur area.

15.45: A police head constable was killed during clashes over CAA in northeast Delhi’s Maujpur area on Monday afternoon, Delhi police said.

15.30: In disturbing videos of the violence at least more than five vehicles of Muslims has been set ablaze, while others show buildings burning.

In a video a pro-CAA protester dressed in a red shirt can be seen running towards an unarmed Delhi Police officer waving what appears to be a gun; he approaches the cop before turning and firing into the air.

In at least three of the videos people can be heard l “Jai Shri Ram” slogans while attacking Muslims.

15.00: Localities in Delhi’s Seelampur, Jafrabad and Maujpur—Babarpur have hoisted saffron flags to mark their houses safe from pro-CAA activists.

14:00: There are shocking videos coming in from Chandbagh area. “Police is watching as a mute spectator, while Snaghi goons carry on an organised attack on Muslims,” an eyewitness says.

“Situation is getting worse, violent Mob is roaming all around in broad day light and Delhi Police is missing from the scene,” a protesting student said.
