AIIMS Trauma Centre to convert into COVID-19 hospital

Amid the effort to contain COVID-19, the All India Institute Of Medical Sciences, (AIIMS) Trauma center in New Delhi will be converted into a dedicated hospital for the treatment of positive cases.

Training of all the healthcare workers started a month back and they will be working on a rotational basis.

The Trauma Centre currently has 242 beds and 18 more are being added to it. Of the total number of beds, there are about 50 ICU beds and around 30-40 beds in the high-dependency unit. It has around 70 ventilators.

So far, the hospital has not received any coronavirus affected patients.

The AIIMS had earlier decided to temporarily suspend the routine walk-in OPD registration of patients from March 23 as part of its efforts to redirect its resources to control the coronavirus outbreak.

“All the emergency patients coming to the Trauma center will be directed to the main AIIMS. Over the last few days, the accidental cases have drastically reduced and the last batch of the patients from the Trauma Centre was shifted to the main AIIMS on Sunday,” said Dr Amil Lathwal, medical superintendent of the hospital.

The number of coronavirus cases crossed the 1200-mark in India on Monday while the death toll rose to 34, according to the Union Health Ministry.
