The United States suffered one of the deadliest days of the coronavirus pandemic with 3,332 fatalities in 24 hours.

The overall death toll in the US now sits at to 49,963, according to a tally from Johns Hopkins University.

The outbreak in the country, which now has the highest number of known cases in the world, has exploded over the last two months.

The US now has 868,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus, up 27,000 from the previous day.

The numbers do not include more than 5,100 people in New York City who died and are believed to have had the coronavirus. Many of those patients died without being tested, a consequence of a strained medical system, and a persistent lack of testing capacity, NY Times reports.

26 million American workers have sought US jobless aid in the past five weeks since the coronavirus hit. About one in six have lost their jobs, by far the worst string of layoffs since the Great Depression of the 1930s.
