Update: After intervention from AMU former students, Saharanpur MP Haji Fazlur Rehman came forward and got the stranded students out from the given facility to their respective homes.
Students of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) who boarded the bus for home from university on Friday remain stranded in Saharanpur without basic facilities. Students who set their journey to Bareilly have shared the distress message of ill-treatment and negligence by the authorities.
According to Mohammad Salman Imtiaz, former president of AMU students’ Union, around 20 boys and girls who have been quarantined at Satsang Bhawan under Police Station Qutub Sher in Subhash Nagar, Saharanpur.
“We were asked to reach proctor office by 10 am, We waited till 3 pm to start the journey,” one of the students told Maktoob. Students were fasting and were not given any refreshment by the authorities.
On Friday morning, after 38 days of lockdown, AMU administration has advised it’s students to take advantage of the proposed relaxation facility announced by the government and return to their hometowns.
In a circular issued by AMU Registrar Abdul Hamid said that initially, students from within Uttar Pradesh can return home on Friday and Saturday while travel arrangements for those from other states, including Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand will be made by their states in the coming days.
Students from many varsities across the country have been asked to go home through transport facilities availed by the government after new UGC guidelines.
The students complained about unhygienic food and they were asked to shelter with hundreds of other laborers in the shed. The students were given separate corners when they protested.
Minor students from Aligarh school grieved that officials are not giving proper answers to their queries.
“I had raised the concerns earlier on the matter in the letter to AMU Registrar, who preferred not to address the concern,” Imtiaz added in his Facebook post.
Students have been asked to contact their parents to pick them from the facilities. They worry that it will be difficult for the family to get to them under lockdown.
AMU hostellers allege that the university administration is forcing students out of the hostels and to do so, they are cutting power supplies for hours.
