The Uttar Pradesh Police has arrested two student activists from Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Farhan Zuberi, and Ravish Ali Khan today.
According to the sources, they have been arrested in connection with the protests against National Population Register (NPR), National Register of Citizen (NRC), and Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019 (CAA) which began in AMU in December 2019 and continued till March 2020.
As per students claim, Zuberi and Khan have been arrested on the basis of a charge sheet filed against more than 100 students of the Aligarh Muslim University, under various non-bailable charges.
Farhan is pursuing post-graduation in social work whereas Ravish is an undergraduate student of the same faculty.
“They were arrested from the outskirts of Aligarh, supposedly called by the police for a meeting there. SDM and CO of Aligarh Police were present during the arrest”, sources close to the detained told Maktoob.
Earlier on 15 April, an ex-student of AMU, Amir Mintoee was arrested and is still in custody. Mintoee too is a student activist and was active in the anti-CAA agitation.
Many students are responding in support of the arrested.
Aligarh Students Union President called the arrest ‘Vendetta against anti CAA NRC NPR protests’ demanding immediate release.
The latest arrests come in sequence with many anti-CAA student protesters who have been arrested from Delhi’s Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). A number of them have been booked under the stringent Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) for their alleged involvement in the February 2020 Delhi pogrom.
Despite the nationwide lockdown, many political dissentients are arrested in UP who were a part of the anti-CAA protest. Students and human rights organisations are campaigning it as a ‘witchhunt’ to silence the minorities.
