198 migrant workers died in road accidents since Mar 25: SaveLife Foundation

At least 198 migrant workers lost their lives in the road accidents during the lockdown from March 25 to May 31, according to data compiled by the SaveLIFE Foundation, a non-profit, non-governmental organization committed to improving road safety and emergency medical care across India.

Migrant workers killed during their return home comprise 26.4% of the overall deaths during the lockdown.

The cause of deaths in maximum number of cases was found to be vehicle to vehicle collisions in which 70 lost their lives. Speeding resulted in the death of 49 migrant workers while vehicle overturn resulted in the death of 32.

According to the recent report, at least 1,461 road accidents took place over the course of the nationwide lockdown in which at least 750 people were killed, including the 198 migrant workers headed home.

Some 1,390 persons were reported injured in the accidents.

Lockdown phases one, two, and four witnessed 25, 17, and 38 deaths respectively while phase 3 contributed to almost 60 percent of all migrant worker deaths during the lockdown.

Uttar Pradesh saw maximum deaths

Uttar Pradesh saw the maximum deaths of migrant workers with 94 deaths, while Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Telangana saw 38, 16 and 11 deaths respectively.
