Kerala NGO draws successful model with self-sufficient townships to rehabilitate flood-affected families

People’s Foundation, a social service enterprise in Kerala drew a successful model in rehabilitating over 1000 families in Wayanad district as a mission to rejuvenate the losses of Kerala’s consecutive floods.

People’s Village, this 2018 Kerala flood rehabilitation project of People’s Foundation in Wayanad, is innovative for the self-sufficient townships with 25 houses, pre-schools, primary healthcare centers, and playgrounds, it embodies.

“We had constructed the townships and shelters with the financial support from the general public, together with the physical work of the volunteers of the foundation. All the shelters were built in compliance with environmental conditions and requirements,” NGO administration said.

In August 2018, houses of thousands in Wayanad, one among India’s most backward districts, were hit by deadly floods, causing the worst floods since 1924 in the state.

People’s Foundation which works with the Jamaat-e-Islami Kerala state committee has planned and implemented its two-year project, worth of 25 crores with the co-operation and participation of various agencies and the public.

The project prioritizes people who despite being eligible for the government’s aids, were unable to avail them due to technical inabilities.

Proclaimed in 2018, it announced to install 300 new houses, renovate 1000 existing houses, 1000 self-employment schemes, 50 drinking water projects, scholarships, medical treatment, and other necessary facilities within a span of a maximum of two years in the affected areas. The plan was implemented soon after the 2018 Kerala flood that left one-sixth of the state’s population homeless or jobless.

The official closure of the project and inauguration of the Panamaram People’s Village will take place on Saturday with Wayanad MP and former president of Indian National Congress Rahul Gandhi joining as the chief guest, through video conference. P. Sreeramakrishnan, Speaker of the Kerala Legislative Assembly, Syed Sadatullah Husaini, national president of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, T.
