Sushant’s family asks media to ‘maintain privacy at this moment of grief’

Actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s family has shared a statement asking his fans to celebrate actor’s life and work and requesting the media for privacy for his family.

“It pains us to share that Sushant Singh Rajput is no longer with us. We request his fans to keep him in their thoughts and celebrate his life, and his work like they have done so far. We request media to help us maintain privacy at this moment of grief,” said the statement released on behalf of his family.

Sushant, 34, was found dead at home in Mumbai on Sunday.

Mumbai Police told news agency PTI that Sushant Singh Rajput died of suicide and that they are investigating. No note was found.

On Sunday, soon after news of actor’s suicide came in, news organization Aaj Tak was spotted reporting from his father’s house in Patna.

In a now criticized video clip, the anchor can be heard stating that Sushant’s father “was not in a state to talk”. The anchor then goes on to wonder if his sisters are available to talk and would be able to “shed light on why Sushant took such a step”.

Even the channel referred to Sushant’s death as “HIT WICKET”.

“Aise Kaise ‘Hit Wicket’ ho Gaye Sushant,” the Aaj Tak scroll on the screen reads.

An actor, dancer, entrepreneur, and philanthropist, Sushant started his career with television serials. His debut show was Star Plus’s romantic drama Kis Desh Mein Hai Meraa Dil, followed by an award-winning performance in Zee TV’s popular soap opera Pavitra Rishta.

He made his film debut in the buddy drama Kai Po Che! (2013), for which he received a nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut. He then starred in the romantic comedy Shuddh Desi Romance (2013) and as the titular detective in the action thriller Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! (2015).

Actor’s highest-grossing releases came with a supporting role in the satire PK (2014), followed by the titular role in the sports biopic M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story (2016). For his performance in the latter, he received his first nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Actor. Rajput went on to star in the commercially successful films Kedarnath (2018) and Chhichhore (2019.
