Former Prime Minister and Janata Dal (Secular) leader Deve Gowda MP, on Friday, issued a statement asking for toning down of nationalist rhetoric in the backdrop of Galwan valley clashes.
Saying that this was not the time for using the language of provocation and revenge, Gowda said that media outlets spreading fake information and cheap rhetoric endanger the lives of our soldiers and diplomatic staff.
He urged that “nationalist rhetoric should be toned down” in order to ensure that the matter is not escalated.
Saying that there is a feeling among our fellow citizens that we are engulfed by hostile nations, he urged the political leadership to ensure that such anxiety is quelled with proper information.
The former prime minister also stated that he fully appreciates the Prime Minister’s decision to call for a meeting of Opposition leaders to discuss the India-China situation and to ensure a bipartisan environment for discussions.
A senior serving military officer and a diplomat should make a detailed presentation to opposition leaders on the ground situation, he said.
He also stated that the demand was not for classified details but truthful information.
He also warned the government against encouraging “reactionary language of economic boycott” which can have deep implications.
“We should here be guided by pragmatism,” he said.
The former prime minister did not attend the PM’s meet of opposition leaders, as he was not invited, said his office.
