UP police ‘arrests’ student activist Sharjeel Usmani, family says no warrant issued

Student activist Sharjeel Usmani has been allegedly detained from his house in Azamgarh on Wednesday evening.

“Sharjeel Usmani has been illegally picked up by 5 unknown persons in the evening today from Azamgarh. There was no arrest warrant and no information has been given to his family,” Afreen Fathima, Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union leader posted on Facebook.

Afreen also said Sharjeel’s books, laptop and other personal belongings have also been taken.

Sources say the men who reached Sharjeel’s home claimed they are from Uttar Pradesh Police Crime Branch.

JNU student leader called the incident “harrasment of Muslim youths” and UP Police’s witch-hunt.

Sharjeel who is a former student at Aligarh Muslim University is also a National Secretary of Fraternity Movement, a student organization and was active in anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests.

Sharjeel is also a writer whose articles appeared in FirstPost, News Laundry, Maktoob among other publications.
