Rahul Gandhi slam UGC decision to conduct final year exams

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday, uploaded a video in social media, bashing the UGC for conducting exams amid COVID-19 outbreak. In the video, he demanded the body to cancel the exams and promote the students on past performance. Gandhi criticizes the UGC for creating confusion and playing with the health of the students.

The decision of the University Grant Commission (UGC) regarding the conduct of exams for final year students is being condemned by many Universities and Colleges all over India. Many Institutions have already decided to boycott this decision and are in unity with the students.

“Our students in schools, colleges and universities, have had to endure a lot due to COVID-19. IITs and colleges have cancelled exams and promoted children. UGC is creating confusion. UGC should also cancel exams and promote students on the basis of past performance,” he said in the video message.

On July 6th, Union Human Resource Development Minister Dr. Ramesh Pokhriyal made an announcement of conducting final-year exams by the end of September, either online, offline or through a combination of both. Minister said that the guidelines were revisited keeping in mind the ‘safety, career progression and placements of the students’.

Congress is already running a campaign called ‘Speak Up for Students’, saying that the BJP government has completely neglected the problems of the students.

The guidelines released by the UGC stated that if a student is unable to appear for the final-year exam can write their exams in a special examination at a later period.

First and second-year students will be evaluated on the basis of internal assessment and mark scored in previous semesters, if unable to conduct exams due to the current situation, according to new guidelines.
