India crosses 1 million COVID-19 cases

India recorded 34,956 fresh coronavirus cases and 687 deaths on Friday, taking the total to 10,03,832. This is the highest daily rise in the number of infections as well as deaths.

According to data released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, more than 6.3 lakh people have recovered and as many as 25,602 deaths were recorded.

India is the third country after the US and Brazil to report more than 10 lakh coronavirus cases and the eighth country to report more than 25,000 deaths.

The Health Ministry stated that only one-third of the total cases of coronavirus were under active medical supervision and nearly two-third patients had already recovered and discharged from healthcare facilities.

Taking to Twitter, former Congress president Rahul Gandhi tweeted: “We have crossed the 1 million mark. If we continue at this pace, we shall cross the 2 million mark by August 10. The government must adopt strict measures to contain the situation.”

More than 13.7 million people around the world have been diagnosed with COVID-19, while more than 7.7 million have recovered and more than 588,000 have died, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
