Nargis Naseem, a survivor of the anti-Muslim pogrom in northeast Delhi, who cracked the CBSE 12th board exams with first-class despite losing her home and study materials in the violence unleashed by Hindu mobs, has been sponsored by Vision 2026, a flagship project under the Human Welfare Foundation, Delhi, for her higher education under its ‘Meritorious Girls Scholarship’ scheme.
Violence against Muslims protesting the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) broke out in northeast Delhi on 24 February, when Nargis was on her way to school for her physical education examination. Accompanied by a relative she returned home safely but her house was burnt down the next day. With the home, she lost all books too.
“It was on the day of my examination that I witnessed the violence while going to school. We could not get any vehicle while returning and spent hours walking through lanes with fear of being attacked before reaching home safely,” Nargis said.
“Days after loosing home and books, an NGO gave me books and was helping me with studies,” she added.
The 17-year-old Nargis’s burnt house was renovated by the Jamaat-e-Islami Hind under its Delhi Relief and Rehabilitation project.
The fashion designer aspirant Nargees was a student of Gokulpuri Government School.
The Women Education & Empowerment Trust (TWEET), an NGO working for the empowerment of women, associated with the Human Welfare Foundation, has offered to take care of the guidance and support for Nargis for her higher studies. TWEET will provide financial assistance and guidance until she completes her studies.
Vision 2026 has been playing a lead role in the rehabilitation of the survivors of the Delhi pogrom. It extends support residents of pogrom-hit areas by renovating damaged houses, shops, and commercial establishments, providing financial support for the purchase of stocks for shops and raw materials for manufacturing units.
Children and wives of the murdered in the pogrom have been sponsored under the Vision 2026‘s projects.
“Children will be provided education support until they complete their education and their widowed mothers will get financial support to take of their families,” NGO said.
