Global coronavirus death toll passes 890,000

The global coronavirus death toll has passed another sombre milestone, exceeding 890,000, with 890,260 confirmed by researchers at Johns Hopkins University.

There have been more than 27.3 million cases of coronavirus confirmed around the world and at least 18.3 million people have recovered.

The number of Americans who died of COVID-19 is more than 186,000 as infections in the country nearly quadrupled to upward of 6.2 million.

India has reported the most deaths from coronavirus in a month. The health ministry says 1,133 people died of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, lifting the total death toll to 72,775.

Brazil had 4.14 million cases as of Monday evening.
