COVID-19: India’s death toll passes 80,000

India, the world’s second-most populous nation appeared to be on course to cross the milestone of 5 million coronavirus cases on Wednesday, as its tally of 4.93 million is just 70,000 short.

India reported 83,809 new infections for its lowest daily jump in a week, the health ministry said on Tuesday.

The death toll in the country crossed 80,000 on Tuesday, swelled by 1, 054 in the last 24 hours, the ministry added.

As many as 37,80,108 people have recovered from the infection. India’s recovery rate rose to 78%, while the death rate fell to 1.6%.

India has so far tested 5,83,12,273 samples, said Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). On Monday alone, 10,72,845 samples were tested.

There are nearly 30 million coronavirus cases worldwide, according to the Johns Hopkins University tracker, with 29,136,553 confirmed so far. The number of deaths has passed 925,000.
