Coronavirus: India deaths pass 90,000

India’s death toll has passed the sombre milestone of 90,000.

There are 5.6 million cases in the country, the second-highest number globally after the United States.

The Union health ministry reported a rise of 83,347 new cases in 24 hours in India.

More than 4.5 million people have recovered from the virus in India. The recovery rate reached 81.3%, while the death rate stood at 1.6%.

The ministry said that India’s testing rate is 875 tests per million population per day, as of September 19.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a virtual meeting with chief ministers of seven states and Union Territories that have the highest number of coronavirus cases in the country.

Meanwhile, the Monsoon Session of Parliament came to an end on Wednesday owing to the rising number of coronavirus cases. Both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha were adjourned sine die (with no appointed date for resumption), seven days ahead of schedule.
