Punjab’s Shiromani Akali Dal quits NDA over ‘anti-farmer’ bills

BJP’s oldest ally Shiromani Akali Dal on Saturday broke ties with the NDA, days after party leader Harsimrat Kaur resigned from the Union cabinet over ‘anti-farmer’ bills.

“Shiromani Akali Dal has decided to pull out of BJP-led NDA alliance because of the centre’s stubborn refusal to give statutory legislative guarantees to protect assured marketing of farmers crops on MSP and its continued insensitivity to Punjabi and Sikh issues,” party said in an official statement released after its core committee meeting which was held in Chandigarh.

Harsimrat Kaur resigned on 17 September soon after SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal strongly opposed the bills in Lok Sabha, claiming these proposed legislations will “destroy” the agriculture sector in Punjab, and announced that Kaur will quit the government in protest against these three bills.
