What is this if not casteism? politicians outraged over UP cops’ forcible cremation of Dalit woman’s body

Opposition parties in the country outraged over the dead-of-night cremation by Uttar Pradesh police of the Dalit woman who died of horrific injuries after being gang-raped and tortured by upper-caste Hindu men.

In horrifying events last night, parents of the 19-year-old Dalit woman said that the Uttar Pradesh police forcibly cremated her daughter’s body. “The cremation was being carried out against the wishes of the family,” the brother of the woman said. Her family was locked in their homes.

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi said Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath doesn’t have any moral right to continue as chief minister.

“I was on the phone with the Hathras victim’s father when he was informed that his daughter had passed away. I heard him cry out in despair. He had just been telling me that all he wanted was justice for his child. Last night he was robbed of the chance to take his daughter home for the last time and perform her last rites,” Priyanka Gandhi said in her two tweets.

“Yogi Adityanath, RESIGN. Instead of protecting the victim and her family, your government became complicit in depriving her of every single human right, even in death. You have no moral right to continue as Chief Minister,” she further tweeted.

Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi tweeted in Hindi.”A daughter of India has been raped and murdered. Fact are suppressed and in the end, her family’s rights to perform the last rites are snatched away. This is insulting and unjust.”

Bahujan Samaj Party supremo Mayawati condemned the manner in which the Dalit woman was cremated.

Former UP Chief Minister Mayawati, in a tweet, said, “The cremation of Hathras gang-rape victim by the Uttar Pradesh Police without handing over the body to the family or without their consent and in their absence in the dead of night is raising doubts and resentment. The BSP strongly condemns such a wrong attitude of the police.”

It would be better if the Supreme Court takes cognizance of the serious case on its own and initiate appropriate action, otherwise from the attitude of the UP government and the police it does not seem that even after the death the gang-rape victim and her family will get justice, she said in another tweet.

Samajwadi Party chief and former UP CM Akhilesh Yadav tweeted: “In the rape-murder of Hathras daughter, conducting her last rites by police in the middle of the night without the consent of the family is against the rituals. It is the most condemnable act to erase evidence. The BJP government has committed a sin and crime by doing so.”

“The Hathras victim was first raped by some men and then yesterday, she was brutalised by the entire system. The whole episode is very painful,” Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted in Hindi.

CPIM General Secretary Sitaram Yechury said: “Shocking criminality. This heinous gangrape and death of a Dalit girl, shows the gruesome dehumanisation of governance by the BJP UP state government & complicit police. The strongest of punishment must be meted out.”

“Even a ‘loathsome’ gangster was extended the basic dignity of being cremated in presence of his family members. Why did #Hathras victim’s parents have to face such mistreatment? What is this if not PATENT caste & class discrimination?,” Asaduddin Owaisi MP, President of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen tweeted.

“Even criminals are allowed dignified cremation. Here is a rape victim being cremated by police at 2:30 am without family members. Could this happen if the family was not dalit? This is a matter of national shame. Our own George Floyd moment,” Swaraj India President  Yogendra Yadav tweeted.

“The India of Babasaheb’s dreams would have caste and gender equality unlike Modi-Yogi’s India of Brahminical Patriarchy. We will fight till we destroy Brahminism!,” Gujarat MLA and Dalit leader Jignesh Mevani tweeted.
