Congress leaders Rahul, Priyanka allowed visiting Hathras to meet Dalit woman’s family

Congress former chief Rahul Gandhi and General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi have been allowed by the Uttar Pradesh government, along with three others, to proceed to Hathras to meet the family of the 19-year-old Dalit woman who was murdered and raped by upper-caste Hindu men last week.

The caste-based violence and forcible cremation have triggered widespread protests across India.

Following the travel plan of the Congress leaders, heavy police deployment has come up on the Delhi-Uttar Pradesh border in Noida. Barricades were installed at the Delhi-Noida Direct (DND) flyway and CrPC section 144 remained imposed in Uttar Pradesh’s Gautam Buddh Nagar.  

Priyanka told news agency “If not this time, then we will try again”. 

 “I will visit Hathras at any cost even if the police does not allow us.,” she said.

Earlier, Congress spokesperson Anshu Awasthi alleged that the step had been taken to prevent Uttar Pradesh Congress president Ajay Kumar Lallu from joining party leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra,
