“Blatant misuse of state power against Republic TV & Arnab Goswami is an attack on individual freedom and the 4th pillar of democracy. It reminds us of the Emergency. This attack on free press must be and WILL BE OPPOSED,” Home minister Amit Shah, finished his tweet with all caps reflecting his ire over the arrest of Arnab Goswami.
Amit Shah wrote, “Congress and its allies have shamed democracy once again”. The Republic TV chief was arrested on Wednesday morning in a two-year-old suicide case in which investigations were reopened recently by the Mumbai police.
The designer had reportedly named Arnab Goswami in a suicide note and had accused Republic TV of not paying him his dues.
Many BJP leaders including ministers have condemned the arrest and defended Goswami on grounds of press freedom. The arrest comes in between Goswami’s row with Mumbai Police over its investigations into a TRP manipulation scam, busted by the police last month.
The responses from BJP allies have baffled rights’ activists who have been campaigning against the BJP for their hard clampdown on Journalists.
