Ruling left aliance surges ahead in Kerala local body polls

CPIM, which used to showcase a good performance in the civic body polls, banked on the achievements in the development front under the four and half years old rule of Pinarayi Vijayan government.

The ruling CPIM-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) is ahead of the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) in corporations, grama panchayats and district panchayats , while the UDF is ahead in more municipalities in the polls to local bodies in Kerala.

As per the latest updates, LDF leads in 510 grama panchayats, UDF in 378, and BJP led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in 24.

The LDF is ahead or winning in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Cochin and Kozhikode city corporations while UDF leads in Thrissur and Kannur corporations. The BJP is in the second place in Thiruvananthapuram corporation where the party has a strong presence.

In municipalities, the UDF leads over the LDF 45-35 with the BJP leading in 2.

A total of 21,893 wards in 1,200 local self-governing bodies including 6 corporations, 941 village panchayats, 14 district panchayats and 87 municipalities, went to polls in three phases on December 8, 10 and 14.

CPIM, which used to showcase a good performance in the civic body polls, banked on the achievements in the development front under the four and half years old rule of Pinarayi Vijayan government, while Congress, Muslim League and other opposition parties during the campaign, focused on various corruption charges against the government and controversies related to the gold smuggling case.

Welfare Party of India (WPI) won 65 seats in one corporation, 14 municipalities, 1 block panjayath and 49 gram panjayaths while Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) won 107 seats in one corporation, 16 municipalities, 1 block panjayath and 67 gram panjayaths.
