Kerala’s Mohammed Azharuddeen hit the second fastest century in the history of Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy and the joint-third fastest by an Indian batsman in the shortest format as he took apart Mumbai’s bowling attack at the Wankhede Stadium on Wednesday.
Story behind the name
The 26-year-old right-handed batsman and wicketkeeper Azharuddeen named after former India captain and veteran cricketer Mohammad Azharuddin.
The current head coach of Kerala, Tinu Yohannan, in an interview with Sportstar, had narrated how the Kerala player’s name came about. Born in 1994 March, the name was thought by Azharuddeen’s brother Kamaruddeen, who insisted that his younger brother be named Azharuddeen after his favorite player Azharuddin, one of India’s most successful captains.
Domestic carrer
Azharuddeen, who hails from Thalangara village in Kasaragod, made his first-class debut on 15 November 2015 in the 2015–16 Ranji Trophy.
He made his List A debut on 10 December 2015 in the 2015–16 Vijay Hazare Trophy and his Twenty20 debut on 2 January 2016 in the 2015–16 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
He has played 22 first class matches, scoring 959 runs.
