BJP leader says Owaisi would help them in UP, Bengal polls

BJP MP from Unnao and controversial Hindu nationalist leader Sakshi Maharaj told media that the AIMIM supremo and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi had helped saffron party in the Bihar Assembly elections. He also predicted that his participation in the Bengal and Uttar Pradesh elections will help the BJP win the state.

Asked about Owaisi’s presence in Uttar Pradesh, Sakshi Maharaj said, “It is God’s grace. May God give him strength. He helped us in Bihar and will help in Uttar Pradesh and later in West Bengal too.”

Congress and other political rivals have often referred to AIMIM as the ‘B’ team of the BJP and called Owaisi’s party as a ‘communal force’.

However, the four-time parliamentarian Owaisi has strongly resented the tag and has denied having helped BJP with his brand of politics.

On Tuesday, responding to questions on being termed agent of BJP, Owaisi said, “We should not care about such allegations. In Bihar elections, we were in Secular Democratic Front and who benefited by it is known to all now.”

Hitting out at political rivals who are terming him ‘vote katwa’, Owaisi said those who are afraid of their defeat are using this term for him.

“They want that people should keep voting them like slaves and others should not contest elections. When we contest any election, our motive is to win it, and not to ensure victory or defeat of anyone else. Victory and defeat are part of any contest,” said Owaisi.

In December, Owaisi had announced his party’s intention to contest the next state elections in Uttar Pradesh as part of a front led by Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party’s Om Prakash Rajbhar.

On Tuesday, he accompanied by Rajbhar, was on a day-long visit to eastern Uttar Pradesh, focusing primarily on Muslim-dominated on Azamgarh and Jaunpur.

Elections in the state are due next year.
