Fifteen migrant labourers, sleeping by the roadside, were crushed to death after a dumper ran over them near Kosamba village, around 60 km from Surat on Tuesday morning.
Early reports say the dumper driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle after it hit sugarcane hanging out of a tractor coming from the opposite direction.
Confirming the development, the police said, “At least 15 people died after they were run over by a truck in Kosamba, Surat.”
A truck collided with a tractor loaded with sugarcane after which the driver of the truck lost control of the vehicle and drove it over the pavement where the labourers were sleeping,” CM Jadeja, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Kamrej Division, Surat said.
The truck driver has been arrested, police said.
Speaking to news agency ANI, the police said, “All the deceased are labourers and they hail from Banswada district of Rajasthan.”
