US passes 27 million infections

The United States has passed 27 million coronavirus cases, according to figures from Johns Hopkins.

The country – the worst affected in the world – has also recorded more than 463,000 deaths.

The Institute for Health and Metrics Evaluation, part of Washington University’s medicine department, predicts the death toll from the pandemic will pass 500,000 by the beginning of March, even with universal mask wearing.

The milestone came as President Biden said it would be difficult for the United States to reach herd immunity, at least 75% of the population inoculated against the coronavirus, by the end of this summer.

“The idea that this can be done and we can get to herd immunity much before the end of next – this summer, is – is very difficult,” Biden told CBS news in an interview.
