Assam: Congress says it will not field candidate from where Akhil Gogoi contest

The Assam Congress-led grand alliance is mulling to not field candidate in the constituency from where newly formed party Raijor Dal’s president and arrested activist Akhil Gogoi will contest in the upcoming state polls, an Assam local media reported.

Senior Assam Congress leader and Lok Sabha MP Pradyut Bordoloi said the grand alliance will also support Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) president Lurin Jyoti Gogoi in elections.

“We are planning to not field candidates in the seats from where Lurin Jyoti Gogoi and Akhil Gogoi would contest,” said Bordoloi.

However, the AJP and Raijor Dal have once again turned down the offer of joining the grand alliance.

Congress has been urging the two new regional parties to join the grand alliance and contest the upcoming polls jointly under one banner.

Both AJP and RD, the regional parties formed last year, are the offshoots of the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests that rocked the state in December 2019.

Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) was launched by student organisations All Assam Students Union and Assam Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad while RD was formed by Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti, a farmers’ body led by activist Akhil Gogoi who is in jail since December 2019 for his role in the anti-CAA protests.
