Students of Aligarh Muslim University have been looking for a peer of theirs for a good part of the last six days, but neither the varsity nor the district administration has had much success in tracing him back. Md Ashraf Ali, a final-year student of Bachelor’s of Arts in Foreign Language (Spanish), has been missing from the University Campus since Tuesday, 23rd February.
Ashraf Ali hails from Araria, Bihar and was a resident of the Sir Syed Hall Annexe.
Ashraf’s roommate, Amjad Ali, told Maktoob that he had talked with Ashraf in the afternoon of Tuesday when he shared his plans to leave for Bihar on the 26th of February. However, when he called him back at 8 pm Tuesday evening, he did not respond. After finding out that Ashraf was missing on the morning of Thursday, the students began searching for him.
It was found through CCTV footage that he had passed the Aftab Hall Gate of AMU at around 3 pm on Tuesday and moved towards the Shamshad Market, after passing in front of the Mayor’s house. However, no further clue has been found of his whereabouts.

At 3AM (24.02.21) he was traced at Anand vihar Station.

After the students registered a First Information Report at the local Police Station with the help of the Police Station, the Police contacted the parents of Ashraf as well as his elder brother in Bangalore, but none of them had any idea of his location. Ashraf’s cell-phone was last traced to the Anand Vihar area at 3 am on Wednesday, 24th February 2021.
On Friday, the Aligarh Police as well as the Proctor Office, AMU could not provide much information to the students demanding further action over their missing peer, which led to protests and public gatherings at the Administrative Block and Proctor’s Office.
Speaking to Maktoob on Sunday, the Proctor of AMU, Professor Wasim Ali said, “We have launched a comprehensive investigation as soon as we were informed of the situation. We have registered an FIR with the Aligarh Police and have cooperated with them, but we do not have a location as of now. His bank transactions could have helped but he only drew out Rs 2500 before leaving on the 23rd, and there has been no transaction since”.
“The Delhi Police has appointed a separate team for the search. There was another person he had talked to before disappearing on WhatsApp, and information about that call can shed some light.” The Aligarh Police has also stated that they are taking every step possible to find out, but there has been no considerable progress.
However, the classmates and peers of Ashraf Ali have not been satisfied with the investigation so far.
“Students who went door-to-door in order to review CCTV footage and find some clues about Ashraf, without any help from the Administration,” says Amjad Ali. “The University administration helped us somewhat after 24 hours but now even they have started to slack off and imply different theories. The Aligarh Police isn’t even informing us of the updates, or trying to use any of the information we provided, such as Ashraf’s IMEI number to find his location.”
