Entire country suffering due to high fuel prices: Congress in Rajya Sabha

Leader of Opposition and senior Congress politician Mallikarjun Kharge raised the issue of sharp rise in prices of petrol, diesel and LPG in Rajya Sabha on Monday, and demanded that the Rajya Sabha discuss this “burning subject” as people are suffering.

‘Entire country suffering due to high fuel prices. Petrol and diesel prices are nearly Rs 100 per litre & Rs 80 per litre respectively. LPG prices have also gone up. Rs 21 lakh crores have been collected by putting excise duty/cess, because of this entire country including farmers are suffering,” he said.

Kharge gave a notice under Section 267 to suspend the legislative business of the House and discuss the issue of rise in prices of petroleum products, PTI reported.

However, Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu did not accept the notice, and said the matter can be raised during the discussion on the appropriation bill.

The Rajya Sabha was adjourned till 1 PM, after Congress MP’s started sloganeering to demand discussions on the rise in fuel prices.
