All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) supremo Maulana Badruddin Ajmal has threatened to take legal action against right-wing elements for claiming in a doctored video that he made anti-national statements.
“I received a video Tuesday. It was released by a fake NGO called LRO with the intention to damage our Assam election prospects. The doctored video says the Mughals ruled India for 800 years and the British ruled it for 200 years. And now, INC-AIUDF will make Assam an Islamic state. This is a 100% fake video,” Ajmal MP told the media.
A 36-second video of a 2019 speech given by Ajmal has gone viral ahead of the Assembly elections in Assam. The Hindu fringe groups affiliated organisation called “Legal Rights Observatory” had been circulating this doctored video which was prosecutable for communal incitement. According to fact-checkers including Guwahati Plus, AltNews, and The Quint, the video is edited and Ajmal “did not say that India will become an Islamic nation”.
The Assam Muslim leader called a group of journalists to his residence and made them listen to his voice in two videos. He said one was original while the other was doctored.
The original speech of Ajmal – uploaded in 2019 on YouTube from a public speech – spoke exactly the opposite of what the Hindutva groups had tried to establish in poll-bound Assam since March 9.
The fake video was shared by India TV anchor Archana Singh, DD News consulting editor Ashok Shrivastav, ABP News anchor Astha Kaushik, News Nation consulting editor Deepak Chaurasia and Guwahati-based News Live whose chairman and managing director is Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, wife of BJP MLA Himanta Biswa Sarma, Alt News reported.
According to Alt News, the full speech is over 15 minutes long. The viral video has been made by merging four segments from the 5:50 mark to the 8:15 mark in the original video.
