“Will stop Love, Land Jihads,” Amit Shah assures Anti-Muslim laws coming soon in Assam

Addressing a poll rally in Kamrup, Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday said that the BJP will bring laws against ‘Love Jihad’ and ‘Land Jihad’ in Assam if voted to power.

“There is a lot of talk in the BJP’s resolution letter, but the biggest thing will be done by the BJP government to bring a law against ‘Love Jihad’ and ‘Land Jihad’,” Shah said.

‘Love jihad’ is a term used by the Hindu nationalist groups to describe an alleged phenomenon where Muslim men lure Hindu women, by hook or by crook, into marrying them and converting to Islam. Hindu group’s propagandists claim that this is an organised racket rooted in a widespread conspiracy. However, successive probes have failed to find any evidence that such a conspiracy exists and the even central government has admitted that the term has no credible definition.

The term ‘Land Jihad’ is introduced in the saffron party’s manifesto for Assam polls. According to BJP leaders, “‘Land Jihad’ is a way to force people to sell off their lands and it happens anywhere where there are Bengali-origin Muslims in Assam.” BJP leaders in the state said they will bring “Land Jihad” law “to tackle the Bangladeshi Muslims’ aggression on the lands of indigenous Assamese.”

“If Badruddin Ajmal’s government is formed here, will it be able to stop infiltrators? Only BJP can stop the infiltrators. Prime Minister Narendra Modi speaks of developing Assam with the help of double engine government and Congress brings Kalapahad to facilitate double infiltration,” said the saffron party leader.

Assam is all set to witness mostly direct or triangular contests between the ruling BJP, its alliance partner the AGP, opposition Congress-AIUDF alliance, and the newly formed AJP’s alliance in the first of a three-phased Assembly election.
