Gujarat: Dead bodies of COVID-19 patients pile up in hospital for 3 days

Over 15 bodies packed in transparent bags are lined up in a room at the civil hospital as they were not handed over to the family members, according to a Times of India report.

In yet another grim example of the worsening pandemic situation, bodies of coronavirus patients are piling up in the Valsad Civil Hospital in Gujarat for the past three days.

Over 15 bodies packed in transparent bags are lined up in a room at the civil hospital as they were not handed over to the family members, according to a Times of India report.

“A help desk will be set up at and the hospital has been ordered to hand over the bodies immediately after completing the formalities,” R R Rawal, district collector, Valsad told reporters.

The relatives of several deceased have complained of two to three days delay of hand overing the dead bodies in last 10 days.

Some of them have not been able to see the dead body of their beloved even after waiting for 36 hours.

The bodies can be seen scattered in the post mortem room. Local media says that foul smells have started coming from the dead bodies.

Valsad district shares the border with worst-affected Maharashtra and the hospital gets critical patients from the rural areas of neighbouring Dang and Navsari districts too.

The Valsad hospital has 400 beds for the COVID-19 patients and all the beds are currently occupied. Reports say the district administration is now working to develop additional hospital facilities to accommodate more patients.
