India COVID-19 cases top 15 million

India reported a record rise in coronavirus infections of 273,810 on Monday, taking its overall case load past 15 million, second only to the United States globally.

The country’s deaths from Covid rose by a record 1,619 to reach a total of 178,769, according to health ministry data.

Total active cases in the country have surged to 19,29,329 after the latest spike. India reported 1,44,178 discharges in the last 24 hours.

Reports say Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chair an important meeting on the Covid-19 related situation at 11:30am today.

Maharashtra saw its highest single-day addition of positive cases ever at 68,631, pushing the state’s overall total to 38,39,338. UP and Delhi are the second and third-worst affected state/UT in terms of daily cases and these two together accounted for about 56,000 cases — nearly similar to the extent of cases reported in Maharashtra.

Covid-19 has killed more than 3 million people and infected over 141 million others globally.
