COVID-19: India reports over 3.14 lakh new cases, highest-ever in the world

The three lakh new coronavirus infections reported in India on Thursday is the highest daily case count in a single country since the virus surfaced more than a year ago.

With 3,14,835 new cases, the total infections in India now stand at 1,59,30,965.

India’s total eclipsed the previous single-day high of 300,669 cases, set in the United States on Jan. 8, according to a New York Times database.

There were 2,104 deaths counted on the same day, another record for India. The toll stands at 1,84,657.

“27,27,05,103 samples tested for Covid-19 up to 21st April 2021. Of these, 16,51,711 samples were tested yesterday,” according to the Indian Council of Medical Research.

Amid the oxygen crisis, the Delhi High Court came down strongly on the Narendra Modi government on Wednesday, saying it seemed that “human lives are not that important.. for the state.”

“Beg, borrow or steal. It is a national emergency,” the court said.
